How to Bake a Homemade Dog Birthday Cake

Our dogs sure love to chow down, don’t they? They are always excited for their daily meal, happy to join us at the dinner table, and anxiously awaiting the possibility of a treat. Since dogs love food—and we love our dogs—why not do something extra special to make their bellies (and hearts) just a little bit happier?

We have the perfect DIY dog birthday cake recipe to create a super tasty, apple peanut butter treat that will certainly keep our dogs feeling full… of love!

DIY dog cake step 1

To bake your dog birthday cake, you will need the following ingredients; two 8-inch baking tins, whole wheat flour, vanilla extract, one fresh apple, baking soda, one egg, applesauce, peanut butter and water. For the icing you will need plain, organic Greek yogurt and peanut butter. We also suggest using small dog treats to add a decorative touch to the dog birthday cake!

DIY dog cake step 2

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. To make your cake batter first combine one egg, three TBSP peanut butter, two cups of water, ¼ cup applesauce, and ¼ tsp of vanilla extract in a bowl. Wisk mixture together until it becomes frothy. Set aside.

Sift four cups of whole wheat flower and 1 TBSP baking powder together into a separate bowl. Next, using both mixtures, slowly mix your dry ingredients into your wet ingredients until your dog birthday cake batter becomes smooth and creamy.

Chop your fresh apple into small cubes. Using a spatula, gently fold the chopped apples into your cake batter.

DIY dog cake step 5

Pour your cake batter into your two baking tins. Let the mixture settle into the tins to ensure a nice, even cake shape. Place your two baking tins into your preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes.

DIY dog cake step 6

To make your icing, combine one cup of plain Greek yogurt and ½ cup peanut butter in a bowl. Mix ingredients together until fully blended. Place icing in the refrigerator until your cake is finished baking.

After baking for 45 minutes, remove cake tins from the oven. Allow the cakes to cool for 30 minutes.

When the cake has cooled, spread 3 TBSP of icing onto the top of one of the cake tiers. Place the other cake tier on top of that icing spread. This will hold the two tiers together, and will also give you a very pretty look when the dog birthday cake is sliced.

Using a small spatula, spread the rest of your icing over top and on the sides of your cake. Smooth the icing using your spatula for a nice, clean look. Using your small dog treats create a fun design or spell out your pet’s name!

Your cake is now ready for your pup to enjoy. If your pup won’t be sharing the dog birthday cake, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to five days!

Since your pup will be so excited to be eating a homemade dog birthday cake, we recommend serving the cake on a surface that is easily cleaned. Feel free to double the recipe if you desire a higher dog birthday cake with more tiers, or replace your applesauce with pumpkin puree for a different flavor!

And if you’re celebrating your pup’s birthday, don’t forget to make them feel extra special with a Birthday Goody Box. Filled with toys, treats, and an exclusive birthday bandana, it is the perfect addition to any dog birthday party.
