12 Days of Pet Adoption Stories: Cat Gets Adopted by Pet Taxi Driver

We all know about the 12 Days of Christmas—the famous holiday carol about a lucky recipient receiving a series of gifts from their loved one. Although gifts can be a nice gesture, most can agree that the true joy of Christmas is being able to spend time at home surrounded by friends and family. Pets are entitled to the same comforts during the holidays, but unfortunately for the thousands of abandoned pets across the country, this isn’t always the case.

There are those pets who are lucky enough to receive the gift of love during the holidays—including those who may have not been ever able to experience this luxury before. In light of the season of giving, we’re offering 12 heartwarming pet adoption stories. These once-abandoned pets finally found their forever homes and are able to spend this Christmas surrounded by the best gift of all—love.

Pet Adoption Story

This cat adoption pet story begins in August 2017, when Patrick accidentally volunteered at a pet rescue.

Patrick owns Patrick’s Pet Care, a “taxi for pets” company that has seen its share of strange transportation requests. So when a woman called his business asking about transportation for a special needs cat that needed to see the vet, Patrick wasn’t too surprised—not even when she explained that the cat was difficult and aggressive, and the person who used to do the transportation for her was no longer around.

Patrick booked the pickup and arrived at the woman’s house with special gloves that go up to the shoulder (normally used by welders), only to find the fear-filled eyes of a chubby tabby who had backed herself into a corner of the woman’s living room.

Once at the vet, the woman refused to go inside to deal with the vet. Patrick agreed to do it instead, thinking maybe she was (strangely) afraid of the friendly cat or dealing with other issues—but the vet firmly told Patrick to take the cat right back to the woman. “It turns out her husband had left her and it was his cat, and she was having me take it to an appointment to be euthanized as vengeance on the husband who left her,” says Patrick. “The vet refused to put down a perfectly healthy animal.”

When Patrick confronted her, she responded by saying if the vet wouldn’t do it, she’d bring the cat to a pet rescue shelter that would. “It hit me all at once what I had just been party to and said right then and there that I would adopt the cat and she could leave,” Patrick says.

And just like that, she walked away, leaving everybody stunned.  “We now have a new office cat named Lakota,” Patrick says. “She’s lovely.”
