A California family not only has their stolen Bulldog back, but they also got to help police officers capture the couple who allegedly took him. Gunny, a 6-year-old English bulldog, was taken from his San Bernandino, California, home during what police officers described as a “strong armed robbery” (which is a terrifying combination of words), according to the San Bernandino County Sheriff’s Department. A couple of days after Gunny was taken, a friend of the family saw a familiar-looking dog being advertised on Craigslist with a $2,500 price tag.

When Gunny’s family — who wish to remain anonymous — found out about the Craigslist ad, they worked with the sheriff’s department to try to catch the thieves. The owners reportedly pretended to be interested in buying the dog and set up a meeting in a public parking lot. As the police officers watched the scene unfold, the owners identified the dog as Gunny; when the two thieves drove away, the cops followed the car, pulled the pair over and recovered the dog. “He’s a complete sweetheart,” his owner told CBS Los Angeles. “He’s an amazing dog and acts like one of our kids. He is one of our kids.” The suspects were identified as Jamill Slaughter, 21, and Carla Martinez, 19. According to the sheriff’s department, the two have been charged with possession of stolen property.
