It’s cold outside and you’re probably craving comfort food like a warm, savory stew. Your dogs are also attuned to the change of seasons, and we think they might enjoy digging into a delicious homemade stew ladled into a bowl, too.
That’s why we created an Instant Pot recipe especially for them: This dog-friendly stew—from recipe developer, cookbook author and food blogger Alison Lewis—is filled with protein-rich beef and nutritious veggies for a drool-worthy canine dish.
This DIY dog treat couldn’t be easier to whip up! All you need is extra-lean beef, golden potatoes, carrots, celery, peas and some flour. After browning the beef, combine the rest of the ingredients in an Instant Pot (or other multi-cooker) and then set it and forget it. In about 30 minutes, you’ll have an dog-friendly stew that’s perfect for the chilly winter months. You can even cozy up and enjoy a bowl yourself with a little extra seasoning. Instant Pot Dog-Friendly Stew DIY Dog Treat
1 and 1/4 pounds extra-lean beef stew meat
3/4 pound baby golden potatoes
2 large carrots
2 large celery stalks
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup frozen peas
4 and 1/2 cups no-salt beef broth, divided (without garlic and onions which are toxic to dogs)
6-quart Instant Pot
Large mixing spoon
Small serving bowl
1 Cut beef into 3/4-inch cubes and sauté using Instant Pot’s sauté setting on high until evenly browned.
2 Dice potatoes, celery and carrots into 1/2-inch pieces.
3 Add veggies and 4 cups beef broth to the Instant Pot, mixing with the sautéed beef until well combined. Close and lock lid, adjust pressure to high and set time for 30 minutes.
4 Select high sauté setting and bring to a boil. Whisk together flour and remaining broth and add to stew. Stir frequently until slightly thickened (about 3-4 minutes).
5 Stir in peas until heated through, about 1 minute more.
6Turn off Instant Pot and ladle stew into a bowl. Cool before serving.
