About the Goldendoodle Dog Breed

A mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, the Goldendoodle has come to be recognized as an excellent family pup as well as a great choice for service work.

We spoke with the Goldendoodle Association of North America to find out more about this breed.

Goldendoodle Physical Characteristics

Most Goldendoodles are a balanced mix of physical characteristics from the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. The breed is bright-eyed and alert with a confident stance, usually weighing anywhere between 10 and 100 pounds.

Color(s)

The Goldendoodle can come in many colors including blonde, golden, apricot, red, white, black, chocolate, silver and parti.

Coat

Litters tend to produce both curly and wavy coated puppies.

Goldendoodle Personality and Temperament

Activity Level

Moderate

Positives

Goldendoodles are a social and outgoing breed that thrives on human companionship. They have a desire to please their owners and are quick learners.

Things to Consider

Since Goldendoodles can grow quite large, they require lots of room to move. This breed has also been known to suffer from separation anxiety, which can lead to destructive behavior if left for too long.

Goldendoodle Care

Ideal Living Conditions

Not suitable for small apartments or outdoor living. An ideal living situation would include a fenced in yard and owners who expect to keep him primarily in the house.

Special Requirements

Longer-haired Goldendoodles require regular coat maintenance with daily brushing and a complete grooming and/or haircut every 6-8 weeks. If daily care is not an option, a short clip will reduce the frequency of brushing to perhaps twice a week.

Goldendoodle Health

Health concerns common to Poodles and Golden Retrievers are shared with the Goldendoodle. The recommended testing and certifications completed before a dog is bred are for issues of the hips, elbows, patellas, heart, eyes, Von Willebrand’s disease and both the Poodle and Golden Retriever mutations of progressive retinal atrophy.

Goldendoodle History and Background

Although the exact date of conception is unknown, the breed is relatively new, with a handful of breeders emerging in the late 1990s to market them. The breed has quickly grown in popularity, leading to requests for mini Goldendoodles, as well.
