I’m one of those people who love to indulge in a bit of cat huffing now and again. And again. And again. I love the various feline scents, and many cat lovers like me have confessed to a full-blown huffing addiction. Over the years, readers have shared their experience with cat smells, and my cats certainly carry a host of lovely aromas on their fuzzy coats.
Here are the top 10 things cats smell like.
10. Grass
Outdoor cats enjoy a nice roll in the grass. What’s better than the smell of a freshly-mown lawn? A cat who smells like a freshly-mown lawn.
9. Dust
Kitties are dust magnets, and sometimes smell like whatever is floating in the air or resting on the ground. I’ve been known to use a lint roller on my cats, and have picked up all kinds of dust particles. That’s, of course, after I’ve adequately sniffed their fur … and probably sneezed a half dozen times. Totally worth it.
8. Poo
My Saffy has long hair, and occasionally shows up with a dingleberry stuck in her butt fur. How do I know there’s a dingleberry? Probably because I’ve smelled it.
7. The vet’s office
The vet’s office definitely has a specific smell, and cats pick it up during a visit. When they emerge from the carrier upon their return home, the other cats cautiously sniff them – and then hope they’re not the next passenger in the Pet Taxi.
6. Cat food
Sometimes I make the mistake of getting up close and personal with one of my cats after they’ve eaten. Then comes the big kitty yawn. Then comes the cat food breath.
5. Fritos
Many cat lovers have confessed to sniffing their cats’ paw pads and noticing a slight scent of Fritos. This corn chip phenomenon also occurs with dogs. What’s up with that?
4. Sweetness
Do you ever bury your face in your cat’s fur and breathe in a sweet, candy-like aroma? Me too. I can’t put my finger on it, but some have descibed the smell as Froot Loops cereal or cotton candy.
3. Human fragrance
I can always tell when my teenage son has been holding one of our cats because the kitty smells like his cologne. My husband says the same thing about my lotion. I smile when I notice a family member’s scent on one of our cats because that means some snuggling happened.
2. Laundry
Maybe it’s because cats like to nap on top of any pile of clean laundry, but they sometimes just smell like a blanket that’s fresh from the dryer or been hanging on a clothesline all day. It’s a happy smell.
And the No. 1 thing cats smell like is … drumroll, please!
1. Pure heaven
No matter how they smell, whether the scent is definable or not, cats smell like pure heaven. I could huff my cats’ bellies all day long and remain perfectly content. My cats, on the other hand, wouldn’t be so fond of that. Still … pure heaven.
