Make sure to bring your dog along when you visit Pittsburgh. There are a ton of dog-friendly shops, hotels, parks and breweries that you both will enjoy, not to mention all the green space all over the city.
Where to Stay: Hotel Indigo
The Hotel Indigo is a dog-friendly chain with a location in the heart of the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The hotel frequently hosts live music that you and your dog can enjoy from the sparkling lobby or the enclosed outdoor patio. The hotel staff will be happy to tell you about dog-friendly places that you can walk to, such as Bakery Square and Mellon Park. There is a $50 fee to have your dog stay with you at this hotel, but you can’t beat the convenience of being in the middle of this lively neighborhood.
Where to Shop: Bakery Square
Bakery Square is a newer development at the old Nabisco Factory in the East End neighborhood of Pittsburgh. If you’re in town with your dog, you can easily walk here from nearby neighborhoods like East Liberty and Shadyside. Anthropology will happily welcome you and your pup in the store, and you can even take them back in the fitting room with you to get a second opinion on that dress. Another store at Bakery Square that welcomes your pup is the locally-owned Ragged Row, where I had my eye on some stylish athleisure wear (perfect for a stylish dog walk). Other dog-friendly stores at Bakery Square include Free People, West Elm and Social.
Where to Walk: Mellon Park
No dog walk is complete without a few photos. Mellon Park is located right up the street from Bakery Square and it’s the perfect place to enjoy some greenery and stage a sophisticated photo of your pup. Bring a blanket to relax in the grass and take in the history of the park—it used to be the grounds of the Mellon mansion back in Pittsburgh’s steel days. The beautiful walled gardens of the mansion remain, and on a beautiful day you will see many engagement and baby photos being taken there.
Where to Restock: Petagogy
After exploring the city, stop into this independent pet supply store to grab special dog treats or new accessory for your dog. Petagogy specializes in healthy products for healthy pets, so even if your dog has dietary limitations, you’ll be able to find something for them to enjoy. The staff is really knowledgeable and more than happy to make recommendations about new products your pup might like. Check their events calendar to see if a Yappy Hour event is happening while you’re in town.
Where to Go Out: Grist House Brewery
Any night you visit Grist House Brewery, you’re bound to find a ton of friendly dogs hanging out while their owners enjoy a micro-brew. This brewery is tucked into a residential area of a small riverfront town in Pittsburgh called Millvale. In the warm months, hang out in the gravel or paved patio at big picnic tables under the string lights. When temps drop, you’re welcome to take your dog inside with you to enjoy a beer in the bar or the covered deck.
