9 Best Dog Breeds to Bring on a Road Trip

Are you a road warrior or a road worrier? Twenty-plus years ago when I started traveling with dogs, I admit I fell into the latter category. How could I possibly visit friends across the country and make sure my dog was not left behind? Back then, folks used to do a double take when I mentioned traveling with my dog. Today, we know better and we travel more frequently with our canine companions in tow.

Many dogs make fantastic road warriors and really enjoy the experience no matter their breed. However, you should never force a travel-fearful dog to take a trip, as this only makes for a miserable (and unhealthy) experience for all involved.

Here are nine breeds that are known for making road tripping an experience to remember:)

Both a lap and companion dog, he is lively and receptive to indoor living with adequate outdoor exercise. In fact, Chin parents are known to have more than just one, sort of like potato chips. Easy to train and watchful without being aggressive, this Rover is always road ready.

Frenchie folks can attest to the affectionate, merry and “center of attention” personality of this companion animal. If you like a dog who likes to be a part of everything, including taking road trips, this pooch is ready to ride shotgun!

Newfies are adaptable to new situations and environments, coupled with sweet dispositions, calmness to change and patience. Just be warned if you happen to be traveling near a body of water because he is always ready to take to a lake, pool or ocean. If you’re heading for the beach, be sure to pack your Newf!

Labrador Retriever

This even-tempered, family friendly breed is devoted, obedient, eager to please and the most popular breed in general. He is easily bored, so frequent rest stops are mandatory (for any dog, for that matter). And get ready to socialize — the Labrador Retriever never met a stranger he didn’t like.

Traveling from place to place may induce stress for some dogs, but the Clumber Spaniel tends to roll with the flow. Conscientious and thorough more than nervous, this retrieving flushing breed is both stoic and easygoing. Want to listen to rock music and sing along as you cruise down the highway? Chances are the Clumber will sleep right through or perhaps gaze longingly as you channel your inner American Idol.

A friendly, devoted dog who gets along well with children, this breed makes a funny travel companion while snoring soundly in the back seat—safely belted in place, of course. Bullheaded and determined, you need to stay on your game and ask for directions when needed. After all, with a Bullie by your side, he’s liable to slobber you into submission for assistance.

Maltese owners often seem to be the most at ease. This breed is alert, intelligent, lively and adaptable. What more could one ask for in a traveling companion? At one point, French royal court held this breed in high regard as lap and bed dogs. Maltese dogs are intelligent and want nothing more than to love and be loved. Cue the easy listening travel music, please.
