When you are traveling by air, there are a few certainties you’re bound to come across when you’re flying. You’ll get a too-small bag of peanuts and you’ll wonder why the person in front of you has to recline their seat all the way back. But having a duck on your flight? Well, that’s pretty darn unexpected.
But, that’s exactly what happened to passengers on a plane going from Charlotte, North Carolina to Asheville on Monday, October 17, according to the Washington Post.
It was there that 4 1/2-year-old Indian Runner duck Daniel Turducken Stinkerbutt (aka Daniel) joined crew and passengers for the flight, accompanying his person, owner Carla Fitzgerald. (Fitzgerald has Daniel as her emotional support animal as a result of trauma from an accident.)
The experience was all captured on Twitter by passenger Mark Essig, who documented the trip with photos and commentary.
“My seatmate, [from] CLT [to] AVL, is this handsome duck named Daniel,” Essig—an author who writes about, fittingly, animals— told his followers.
Essig then shared an awesome video of Daniel happily wagging his tail feathers, as well as a cute picture of the duck arriving in style in his “red-shoed glory” and taking a gander (sorry) out of the airplane window. (See below!)
Daniel’s travels and the fascination of his co-passengers quickly went viral, but as Fitzgerald explained to the Washington Post, there’s nothing out of the ordinary about her companion.
“To me, having an emotional support duck is normal — it’s my new normal.”
