Sure, you can buy your feline family member some cat treats at the store, but if you want to put a little bit of extra love into treat time, you can make some DIY pumpkin cat goodies at home.
Pumpkin, featured in each recipe, is great for your cat’s digestion and helps prevent hairballs. Show your feline how special she is with a little time spent in your kitchen just for her.
Under the Sea Cat Treats
- 1 cup low-sodium skinless boneless canned sardines, drained
- 1/2 cup 100% canned pumpkin (like Nummy Tum-Tums 100% pure organic pumpkin)
- 1 tablespoon fish oil (like American Journey Wild Alaskan salmon oil)
- 1 tablespoon kelp
Mix together and roll into balls. Put leftovers in container, separating each layer of balls with waxed paper to keep from sticking together. Treats keep in refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Pumpkin Pie Cat Treats
- 2 cups brown rice flour
- 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
- 1 cup canned pumpkin
- 1 cup grated carrots
- 1/2 cup unsweetened plain applesauce
- 1/4 cup brown rice flour for rolling
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a food processor blend pumpkin, applesauce, and carrots until smooth. Mix brown rice flour and oatmeal in a bowl. Add wet ingredients to the dry and mix by hand until dough forms. On a floured countertop or cutting board, roll dough to about ¼-inch thick. Use cookie cutter to form cute shapes or cut into small squares. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 7 minutes. Flip treats over and bake for another 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool thoroughly. Store in fridge or freezer; keeps for months.
Tuna Pumpkin Biscotti Cat Treats
- 1 cup whole spelt flour (easiest on digestion)
- 1 can low-sodium tuna in water (do not drain)
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin light tasting olive oil
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup canned pumpkin
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheet with parchment or waxed paper. Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl. Spread dough evenly on prepared pan to about 1/8-inch thickness. Bake for 20 minutes, remove from oven, and cool for 5 minutes. Flip sheet of treats, peel off paper, and bake for another 8 minutes. Turn off oven and let pan of treats sit for 1 hour to crisp up. Remove and cool completely on wire rack. Cut into 2-inch by 1-inch strips. Store in refrigerator or freezer; keeps for months.
