If you’re a bunny mama or dad with a passion for DIY, we’ve got you covered. We’ve whipped up this easy cake for your favorite rabbit, made from the vegetables, fruits and oats hungry bunnies crave.
What kind of cake is it, you ask? A carrot cake, of course! We’ve swapped out the sugar and flour and added healthy leafy greens and oats as well as bunny favorites like carrots and banana to create a homemade rabbit treat that mimics the classic dessert.
Like any sweet treat, this carrot cake is intended to be a special surprise—not an everyday meal. “Fruits and carrots are treats, and greens are healthy meals, making this a great treat,” explains Dr. Sandra Mitchell, DVM. “We generally recommend primarily hay and green leafy vegetables for rabbits, with very limited amounts of fruits.”
So, if you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate your bunny’s birthday, Gotcha Day (the anniversary of their adoption) or another special holiday, hop to it!
What you'll need:
Ingredients
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 1 tbsp. parsley leaves
- 1 Romaine lettuce leaf
- 3 tbsp. shredded carrot + 1 tbsp. for top
- 1/4 overripe banana
Supplies
- Food processor
- Mixing bowl
- 3-inch round metal dough cutter
- Baking sheet
- Fork
- Spoon
Yield:
One Carrot Cake
Serving size:
One treat per rabbit
Prep time:
5 minutes
Bake time:
15 minutes
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place oats, parsley, lettuce and 3 tbsp. carrot into food processor.
2
Process until the vegetables look flaky and the mixture can be pressed into a sticky dough.
3
Press the dough into the round dough cutter. Use your fingers to flatten the top, so that the dough forms a round cake inside the dough cutter.
4
Bake the cake inside the dough cutter at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes.
5
Mash ¼ of an overripe banana with a fork until smooth.
6
Spoon the mashed banana onto the top of the cake, and spread to cover the top with banana “icing.”
7
Sprinkle remaining 1 tbsp. shredded carrot on top of the cake. Remove the cake from the dough cutter.
8
Serve to your favorite bunny!
Cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but we suggest serving it to your bunny immediately; otherwise, the banana topping will oxidize and turn brown. It’ll still be safe for your rabbit to eat, but it won’t look nearly as appetizing!
This recipe was reviewed by a veterinarian. It is intended as a treat or snack. Treats should only constitute a small percentage of your bunny’s daily food. Feeding too many treats can lead to nutrient deficiencies. If your pet has health issues or if you have any concerns, consult your pet’s veterinarian before offering this food item.
